Using photos to identify and check plants

Add plants to a zone from a photo, or ask Aqua about a plant's condition.

You can use photos in two ways with Agent Aqua: to add plants to your zones, and to ask Aqua about a plant's condition in the Agent chat.

Identifying plants from a photo

When you're setting up a zone, you can tap Identify from photo instead of typing individual plant names. Choose or take a photo of your zone, and Agent Aqua will identify the plants it can see and add them to your zone automatically. It's a quick way to populate a zone if you have a photo that shows your plants clearly.

Once identified, you can review the plant list, remove any mistakes, and add any plants the photo missed. Agent Aqua will then work out each plant's water needs and overwatering risk as usual.

Asking about a plant in the chat

On the Agent tab, you can attach a photo to any message and ask Aqua about it. Tap the photo icon, choose an image, and ask: "What's wrong with this leaf?", "Is this a weed?", "Can I eat this?" or anything else you're curious about.

This is especially useful for diagnosing problems — yellowing leaves, spots, wilting, pests — or identifying mystery plants in your garden. Aqua can often spot issues and suggest treatments.

Tips for good photos

Close-up and clear: get close enough to see detail, but not so close the image is blurry. A 6-inch distance is usually ideal.

Well lit: take photos in daylight or bright shade. Avoid photos taken indoors under artificial light, which can be misleading.

One plant in frame: if you're asking about a specific plant, try to frame it alone. If you're asking Aqua to identify all the plants in a zone, a wider photo is fine.

Show the problem: if you're diagnosing an issue, include the affected part — the whole leaf, the stem, or a view of the plant from a distance so Aqua can see context.

Avoid shadows: harsh shadows can hide detail and make diagnosis harder.

Important: not a guarantee

Aqua can make mistakes identifying plants or diagnosing problems. A misidentification might lead you to add the wrong plant to your zone, which would throw off your watering advice. A misdiagnosis might lead you to apply the wrong treatment.

Always verify Aqua's guess, especially if:

  • You're about to buy a treatment or product based on its diagnosis.
  • The advice involves chemicals, food plants, or anything safety-related.
  • It's a plant you're not sure about anyway.

When in doubt, consult your plant's label, a local gardening expert, or a plant identification app designed specifically for that job.
